Are We Getting Older, or Are Things Looking Bad?

It’s no surprise that people become more skeptical and more pragmatic as they get older. It’s completely natural: the experiences we’ve lived through and the difference in energy compared with youth take their toll, and that’s not a bad thing.
Maturity brings wisdom and experience, but you have to pay the price of disenchantment and losing your enthusiasm.
However, I don’t know if it’s just an impression, but I get the feeling that in recent years there are objective reasons to be pessimistic: climate change, billionaires controlling thought and opinion through social media, the risk of the current system collapsing and social contracts breaking down with the arrival of AI, etc.
Are we really at a critical point as a species? It depends on the day: you’ll wake up thinking it’s an alarmist view, or not. What is beyond doubt is that, with the exception of the world wars, our future as a species (and that of our planet) had never been put on the table on such a large scale.
Given the possibility that this danger is real, we should act responsibly and not let ourselves be carried away by politicians, social media, and other players blinded by personal enrichment, and work on making a better world, each of us in our own little corner. Sitting on the fence, or staying silent, is not a responsible stance, and at the point we’re at, it can have very serious consequences. The sum of the common-sense voices of millions of people who are silent now may be the only wall that stops the fall of humanity.
I’d like to finish with a joke, but all the ones I can think of are really bad.
